About Us

We listen. We partner. We solve.

That’s how we create value for today and tomorrow. That’s Smarter Law.

Smarter Law is our brand promise to clients, and powers our ambition to be Australia’s leading independent law firm.

We deliver outstanding legal services to corporate, public sector and private clients, both Australian-based and those offshore doing business in Australia.

We work with clients across sectors who lead, challenge and reshape their own industries. We build strong and enduring client relationships. Clients tell us they value our commerciality, our responsive and personal service and our interest in their business and industry.

Our purpose is to enable our clients, our people and our communities to thrive. Our success depends upon the success of our clients, our people, and the communities in which we live.

How Hall & Wilcox uses artificial intelligence (AI)

AI offers exciting opportunities for innovation, productivity and efficiency. AI also poses risks to be managed in terms of confidentiality, privacy, accuracy of information, and the infringement of rights. Our approach to AI ensures that we comply with relevant laws, court, government and client requirements and expectations, professional obligations and best practice, as well as aligning with our purpose, ambition and our Hallmarks.

What tools we use

Hall & Wilcox uses both proprietary and third-party AI tools, including platforms such as Copilot, Mary Technology and Harvey. Successes include significant time savings, improved responsiveness and reduced turnaround time. This has also led to better outcomes as it has allowed our people to focus on matter analysis, strategy, and faster resolution of matters.

The firm is developing new AI tools and we continue to build solutions to support the use of AI for bulk, routine low-value work. We are also working to develop custom workflows and playbooks in Harvey, enabling lawyers to focus on strategic and higher value work.

The AI tools we use have been selected or designed for transparency and explainability, and have in-built mechanisms for the verification of the output against the source content. They also have embedded guardrails and grounding for quality assurance.

Our approach to governance, risk and compliance around AI adoption

We have implemented a comprehensive governance framework for AI adoption, led by an AI Steering Committee. Our approach is aligned with the Australian Government’s Voluntary AI Safety Standard and AI Ethics Principles to use AI safely and responsibly.

Our AI Usage Policy manages the use of AI across the firm, and we have internal oversight mechanisms to monitor AI usage. We have also aligned our approach with the OAIC guidance on privacy and Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Training is a key enabler of our adoption of AI, and we are taking a comprehensive approach to educating our people and upskilling them in the use of AI. This includes training on how AI tools work and using AI responsibly and effectively.
